Student Contest

The seventh International Conference on Establishment Statistics invites students and recent graduates to participate in the ICES 2024 Student Paper Contest. To be eligible for the award, students must submit a full paper for review by February 12, 2024. The winner will be announced in March 2024.

The student contest committee will consider all papers that relate to the study of establishment statistics (i.e., statistics on businesses, farms, and/or institutions). Papers can focus on research methodology and/or substantive findings but must be motivated by an issue or challenge pertaining to establishment statistics. Students are limited to one submission and a student must be the first author of the paper and have made a substantial contribution to the content.

A single prize of $1,500 will be awarded to the student with the winning paper and the student will present the paper at ICES VII, for which the registration fee will be waived.

Eligibility

  • To be eligible to participate, you must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at any level or a graduate receiving their degree after January 1, 2023, and submitting research conducted as a student (i.e., up to the level of a doctoral degree).
  • Non-students (collaborators or advisers) can be co-authors but not the primary author of the paper.

Judging Criteria

  • Papers will be judged on their relevance to establishment statistics, quality of research design, originality, significance, organization, and presentation.
  • All submissions that meet the eligibility criteria will be considered; however, preference will be given to papers that have not been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal at the time of submission.

Submission Instructions

  • Papers must be no longer than 5,000 words, excluding citations, figures, and tables.
  • Submissions should include a statement from a faculty adviser attesting to the role the student played in conceptualizing the study and writing the paper.
  • The following must be included in a cover letter with your submission: your name; current affiliation; student status; contact information (i.e., email, telephone number); and a statement regarding whether the paper has been presented elsewhere, published, or accepted for publication at the time of submission.
  • The paper submission should be blinded and submitted as a separate document from the cover letter. The blinded paper must contain a title page and abstract, but all identifying information about the author, acknowledgements, and other identifiers should be removed.
  • To submit your paper for consideration, send an email including all the documents to ices@amstat.org by February 12, 2024.
