Invited Sessions
The theme for JSM 2016 is “The Extraordinary Power of Statistics.” To have the best chance of receiving an invited session slot, you need to:
- Have solid new work in an important field
- Know some of your competitors working in the same field
- Be willing to reach out to your competitors and forge a session with energy in it
Invited sessions can be:
- Papers: includes 2–6 speakers and/or discussants
- Panels: includes 3–6 members who are able to debate each other on a particular topic
To propose an invited session:
- Decide on a theme
- Shop your theme around the people you know are active in that area
- Write a proposal briefly saying why the theme is interesting and important, listing the proposed participants, and, if necessary, supporting the participants' qualifications to speak on the topic
- Submit your proposal via the online system to an ASA section for sponsorship
In addition to ASA sections, you may submit your ideas to members of the program committee from the following:
- International Biometric Society, ENAR
- International Biometric Society, WNAR
- Institute of Mathematical Statistics
- Statistical Society of Canada
- International Chinese Statistical Association
- International Indian Statistical Association
- Korean International Statistical Society
- International Society for Bayesian Analysis
- Royal Statistical Society
- International Statistical Institute
- ASA committees
If you have ideas that don't fit any of the sections or partner societies, you may send them to 2016 JSM Program Chair Jeff Morris, though he has little latitude and will need to turn down most, if not all, such submissions. Also, ideas for invited poster presentations should go directly to 2016 JSM Poster Chair Genevera Allen.
Submission
Opens: July 15, 2015
Closes: September 3, 2015
To submit an invited session proposal, you will need the following:
- Session Type (Invited).
- Session Sub Type (Paper or Panel).
- Primary Sponsor (Outside Organization, ASA Committee, ASA Section, Sponsoring Society, ASA Journal). A pull-down screen with a pre-approved list is provided.
- Session Title.
- Session Description. Please provide any of the following information:
- Short description of session, including focus, content, timeliness, and appeal
- List of invited speakers/panelists, including affiliations and email addresses for each and tentative title for each presentation
- Format of session (e.g., chair, 3 speakers and discussant)
- Session organizer, including affiliation and email address.
- Session chair, including affiliation and email address.
- Discussant (if any), including affiliation and email address.
Submitted proposals will be available for editing July 15–September 3, 2015 (11:59 p.m. ET). To edit a session, you will need the confirmation number and password.
