Student Women in Stats Panel

Student Women in Stats Panel (303703)

*Purvasha Chakravarti, Carnegie Mellon University
*Shannon K Gallagher, Carnegie Mellon University
*Lan Huong Nguyen, Stanford Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering
* Xiaotong Suo, Stanford Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering

In 2015, a group of female PhD students in the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) statistics department noticed that they were outnumbered by the male students. For the CMU department, the historical average of women graduates is about 40%, which is similar to other departments and is relatively high compared to other science and mathematics fields. The students sought departmental support to establish a Women in Statistics group, which has been growing (in numbers and experience) and providing a supportive community for women in the department. The group sponsored dinners, wine nights, coffee hours, and visits to high schools. This panel will include graduate students from CMU and Stanford’s Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering (ICME), who will engage participants in a lively conversation about strategies for creating and sustaining supportive environments for women graduate students in statistics and data science.
