Careers Involving Quantitative Skills- Miami University Model for Promoting STEM Fields to High School Girls (303492)

*Lynette Hudiburgh, Miami University

The underrepresentation of women in science is a known issue in the US. Miami University has been taking a proactive approach in dealing with this issue by promoting the STEM fields to young women at the high school level. More than 100 young women from Southwestern Ohio high schools attended Careers Involving Quantitative Skills (CIQS) Day where they engaged with Miami faulty members by attending presentations and participating in hands-on activities. This event is initiated and sponsored by the Department of Statistics with support from the Colleges of Arts and Science, Education, Health, and Society. We will discuss the CIQS Day model and provide some evidence about the satisfaction rate of those students who attended the event. We will show the survey results and the statistical analysis on those girls who attended the event as they became more educated about the STEM fields and demonstrated greater interest in taking more science and math courses. We believe that the Miami’s CIQS model should be implemented across schools in the US to promote the benefits and importance of quantitative skills to high school women.
