WITHDRAWN: Determining the Causality Variables in Female Genital Mutilation: A Factor-Screening Approach (303484)

Ekele Gideon Alih, Federal Polytechnic Idah

Female genital mutilation (FGM) has three major types (Clitoridectomy, Excision, and Infibulation) which arise from the degree to which the external genitalia of the female are affected. This study examines the factors that cause FGM in a logistic regression scenario. Based on the survey conducted by the Public Health Division, Nigeria Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, the tau statistic was used to screen 9 factors that cause FGM in order to select few of the predictors to fit a multiple regression equation. A total of 300 respondents were selected for the survey based on multi-stage sampling procedure. The tau statistic showed that Religion, Occupation and Campaign against FGM are the most highly associated variable to FGM. It was further observed that 199 respondents does not support the campaign against FGM, but of this number, 187 does not support FGM and several of them (181) are employed. Since there is a considerable relationship between Education and occupation status (??=0.4), it could mean that the improvement in Education status could considerably improve enlightenment on the danger of FGM thereby discouraging the belief and the support for FGM in the African society.
