Training In-Service High School Mathematics Teachers to Teach Introductory Statistics: A Case Study (303482)

*Amy G Froelich, Iowa State University

The study of data analysis, statistics, and probability plays a prominent role in the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) throughout grades K - 12. In-service high school mathematics instructors, in particular, are frequently asked to teach topics in the Statistics and Probability domain, the college-level introductory statistics course, or the Advanced Placement Statistics course. Due to lack of training, many teachers report feeling unprepared to do so. The recent report from the American Statistical Association, The Statistical Education of Teachers, calls on the statistics community to create professional development opportunities for these teachers to assist them in being able to effectively teach data analysis, statistics, and probability. In this paper, I will describe a course developed and taught at Iowa State University to provide in-service mathematics teachers with the content knowledge and statistical pedagogy necessary to become more effective teachers of statistics.
