Mentoring through Sharing: A Journey as an Applied Biostatistician in Academia (303447)

*Laura H. Gunn, Stetson University

Biostatisticians find ourselves in high demand within academia, government, and industry alike. How do we choose our best fit? Do we have to choose? Or, is it possible to bridge these realms and become an applied biostatistician in public health and medicine, with an academic home who seeks projects from the other realms to stay abreast with local and global needs and trends? This presentation will provide an example of a path, experiences, and challenges across different academic environments, university types, and roles, intended to help one identify one’s passion as an applied biostatistician. Whether one is interested in a career that is primarily research-focused, teaching-focused, program-building/administration, or something in between, the presence of strong role models, both women and men, can have an empowering influence on the opportunities we seek, directions we take, and outcomes we achieve. Through this interactive presentation, we will discuss opportunities and challenges of being an applied biostatistician in academia. This presentation will provide an opportunity for mentorship and guidance to students and young faculty.
