Successfully Navigating the Promotion and Tenure Process

Successfully Navigating the Promotion and Tenure Process (303365)

*Merlise Clyde, Duke University
Karen Kafadar, University of Virginia

Keywords: promotion and tenure review; career development

The period leading to promotion and tenure (P&T) review is a time of great anxiety for most faculty members. P&T committees often do not have a statistician among their membership, creating additional concerns about informed review of statistical faculty. In addition, despite great progress in recent decades in reducing gender bias and creating more family-friendly tenure clocks, women may still be at a disadvantage due to implicit bias and other factors. Each university may have its own rules and culture. Being one’s own advocate is extremely important. In this session, recommendations for preparing oneself for promotion and tenure review will be presented and discussed. This preparation process begins long before the actual creation of the dossier and both types of preparation will be discussed. While the focus will be on planning for the review for promotion to Associate Professor and awarding of tenure, review of tenured Associate Professors for promotion to full Professor will also be considered. The speaker will draw on experience as a department chair, P&T Committee member, and author of numerous external review letters. Audience questions and discussion will be encouraged.
