Communicating for Impact and Influence

Communicating for Impact and Influence (303350)

*Arlene Sandra Ash, University of Massachusetts Medical School

Keywords: public speaking, writing

The speaker has survived, and ultimately thrived, in near-all-male environments since her days as an undergraduate math major. She is known as a methods expert and has testified before Congress, commissioners and juries. Her health services work is used world-wide and she has helped the ASA to engage in electoral integrity issues. Dr. Ash originally chose a ‘technical” major because she enjoyed the satisfaction of “perfect” solutions – preferring to avoid the messy, subjective work of writing papers. However, gaining access to work that is fun and influential ultimately requires effective communication. In this session, we will demonstrate – and practice – oral and written tools (tricks?) for being heard and listened to. We will highlight the importance of speaking slowly and clearly, and of crafting your message from the “listener’s perspective.” You are invited to come prepared to introduce yourself, and your expertise and interests, in a less-than-one-minute oral presentation and in no more than 200 written words.
