We all experience a job-interview as an interviewer and/or an interviewee in our career life. It is a nerve-wracking experience for interviewees and time consuming and costly for interviewers, yet it could be one of the most important events in our lives. The ultimate goal of the interview process is to determine whether the institute and candidate would make an ideal match. However, strategies to effectively achieve that goal are often undermined. From a statistical point of view, an interview is a dangerously small sample size to make a good decision, although we collect a lot of supplemental information including CV, academic record, references, and social networks to assist the final decision. Even following several in-person interviews, it is impossible to assure that we’ve learned everything there is to know about a candidate or an institute. This talk will highlight the key points to achieve a successful interview experience for both job seekers and hiring parties. The guidelines are based on four major authentic leadership roles and focused on for statisticians. A few good and bad cases will be illustrated as examples.
