Keywords: law, discrimination, employment, education

“Life is unfair,” Jimmy Carter once remarked. Still, it would be good to have a remedy for the unfairness we sometimes encounter, whether in education, employment, property rights, care of children, housing, or just day-to-day life. Often there are various sources to whom we might complain and from whom we might seek relief – grievance committees, human resource offices, ombudspersons, commissions of varying jurisdiction. But when these fail, we would like to know of our legal rights and expectations of legal remedies. This talk summarizes US law, primarily as it relates to gender discrimination, and touches on international standards. Strategies, procedures, safeguards, and pros and cons of pursuing a legal complaint are reviewed, with particular attention to employment law and cases.
