WITHDRAWN: Building Capacity for Statistics and Research in Context: Experiences from US (Ohio) and Ethiopian Colleges of Education (303306)
*Ann O'Connell, Ohio State UniversityBuilding capacity for research is a critical component of faculty development efforts worldwide. Our presentation details our experiences building research capacity within two colleges of education: Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia, and The Ohio State University (OSU) in the US. We emphasize the unique role of statistics training in capacity building strategies. The first-author was a Fulbright Scholar at AAU in 2013-14, and has established collaborative statistics and research training efforts across both institutions. As Director/Asst. Director of the new OSU-EHE Research Methodology Center, we are currently building statistics/research capacity in our College. There is much to be gained from a comparative understanding of capacity building experiences in both settings. We review frameworks for research capacity building and consider how the challenges of building a strong education research culture can be addressed within both contexts. We also highlight the importance of role-modeling that women in statistics and research capacity efforts can provide, particularly in emerging economies such as Ethiopia.
