Successful Experiences in Knowledge Transfer from a Biostatistician (303266)

*Melanie Poulin-Costello, Amgen

Keywords: knowledge transfer, communication, interpretation

One of many important responsibilities of the biostatistician (biostat) in drug development is to motivate study designs and interpret results to non-statistical, clinical and business colleagues 1 on 1, in a study team or as a seminar. Knowledge transfer of study design and statistical analysis is necessary for a fully functioning strategic partnership in robust drug development. Knowledge transfer from the biostat to colleagues must be a targeted, focused process. The biostat must discern audience’s needs, and how to transfer that knowledge in an engaging manner so that understanding takes place. Knowledge transfer can occur. A case study of several series of statistical seminars to physicians, drug developers, and commercial partners will be presented with commentary on the success. Beyond the well-established literature for good presentation and communication skills, techniques, resources, and motivation will be presented to address the challenge of knowledge transfer for the biostat in the 1 on 1, study team or seminar settings.
