WITHDRAWN: Exploring How Women in Statistics and Data Science are Impacted by the Gender Wage Gap (303248)

Keywords: women, gender wage gap, statistician, data scientist, temporal flexibility, professional development

This project explores how women in statistics and data science may be impacted by a gender wage gap. Harvard economist Claudia Goldin’s research demonstrates that the high cost of temporal flexibility in some occupations accounts for a large portion of the wage gap between men and women in the same profession. As women more frequently bear the brunt of family care-giving, they more frequently seek out occupations that allow for greater temporal flexibility. In some professions, such as law, occupations that offer the amenity of temporal flexibility tend to pay less than law occupations in which the employer or client dictates the employees’ availability. The cost of temporal flexibility for employers of statistics and data science professionals can vary greatly due to the diverse fields that employ these professionals. For example, women working as statisticians or data scientists at technology firms are less likely than those at financial services firms to be penalized (in terms of pay and opportunity) for temporal flexibility.
