Abstract Submissions – Deadline February 1, 2017

Presentations may be given on any topic of statistical interest; however, authors are encouraged to submit papers on the theme set by 2017 ASA President Barry Nussbaum, “Statistics: It's Essential.” Additionally, abstracts with a primary focus on statistical applications are encouraged.

Presenters may elect to use one of the following formats:

Contributed Paper
Contributed Poster
Speed Presentation
Topic-Contributed* Paper or Panel
Roundtable Discussion (A.M. or P.M.)

*Session ID and organizer information required

Opens: December 1, 2016
Closes: February 1, 2017

To submit a contributed session abstract, you will need the following:

  1. Session Type (Contributed )
  2. Session Subtype (Paper, Speed, or Poster )
  3. Primary Sponsor (ASA Committee, ASA Section, JSM Sponsoring Society). A pull-down screen with a pre-approved list is provided.
  4. Abstract Title
  5. Abstract Text
  6. Abstract Keywords
  7. Presenting author and co-author contact information. Please note, there can only be one presenting author. Accurate and unique email addresses are required for all authors.
  8. Note if the abstract can be considered for alternate session subtypes. The program committee will not have space for all paper abstracts received. Acceptance is more likely if the presentation can be made in different session formats.

After You Submit

The presenting author listed on each abstract will be notified via email on March 30, 2017, of the following:

  • Session number
  • Date and time of session in which abstract has been programmed
  • Contact information for session chair
  • A web link to the preliminary online program
  • A web link to where you can edit your abstract
  • A web link to detailed information about your responsibilities as a JSM organizer, chair, discussant, speaker, panelist, or poster presenter
  • Draft manuscript deadlines
  • Speaker Management Room information

Revisions

You may revise your abstract text, title, and keywords or add coauthors from December 1, 2016, through February 1, 2017, and March 30, 2017, through April 18, 2017.

Proof of Progress

All presenters must send proof of a paper in progress to the appropriate JSM session chair by May 17, 2017. Proof of a paper in progress can be a draft manuscript, detailed outline, PowerPoint slides, etc. If you do not send the required proof, your paper will be deleted from the program and be ineligible for publication in the JSM Proceedings. This requirement applies to all contributed and topic-contributed speakers (including poster presentations) and invited sessions with discussants.

Proceedings – Deadline October 1, 2017

The 2017 JSM Proceedings will be published digitally. Authors will submit their papers electronically to a web collection site between 12 p.m. EDT August 29 and 11:59 p.m. EDT October 1. Submit early. The deadline is firm, and you can expect delays due to heavy volume around that time.

Paper Format and Page Limits

JSM Proceedings will be published in electronic format only. To maintain a uniform and professional look, all papers must conform to the formatting requirements. To help in this endeavor, the ASA has created a Word template and LaTeX template (asaproc.cls, template.tex) for you to download and use.

Following are basic formatting guidelines:

  • 8.5 x 11
  • Margins: 1 in. top and bottom; 1.5 in. left and right
  • Single-spaced
  • Fully justified (figures and tables centered)
  • 11-point Times New Roman
  • Color graphics are acceptable
  • Single column
  • One space between sentences
  • No page numbers (they will be determined later)
  • Tables and figures may come within your text or at the end of your paper

You must upload a nonsecured PDF file to the submission site; no other formats will be accepted.

Publication Fee

To offset the cost of producing the 2017 JSM Proceedings, the ASA hopes you will consider paying an optional $90 publication fee. You may pay this online when submitting your paper or by filling out this form and faxing it to (703) 684-8069, ATTN: Joyce Narine.

Following is a sample of the standard format for referencing your paper:
