Very common questions from people designing surveys are: how long can the survey be? Which question formats should I use? A lot of previous research has been done already to answer this. However, these questions may have different answers depending on the population of interest, the mode of data collection used, etc. The goal of this paper is twofold: 1. Give an overview of what the current situation is in the case of an opt-in online panel, in terms of survey characteristics, participation, and evaluation, by reviewing 186 surveys ran by the survey agency Netquest in Spain in 2016. This will be useful to determine areas where further research needs to focus. 2. Study the relationships between levels of dropout or survey evaluation and key characteristics of the questionnaires. This will allow highlighting what characteristics are most important to reduce dropout and to improve the survey evaluation. Based on these results, we will propose practical recommendations for future survey design in the frame of opt-in online panels.
