Title: Resources for Teaching Causality in Introductory Statistics Courses

Abstract:

The revised GAISE college report recommends students in introductory statistics courses gain experience with multivariable thinking. Assessing causality is an important component of multivariable thinking and the goal of many statistical analyses. Traditionally, introductory courses do not discuss causality, except for the warning that correlation does not imply causation. To better align with GAISE recommendations, many statistics educators argue students should gain experience with ideas in causality in the introductory course. Unfortunately, there are few resources for teaching causality in introductory courses, where topics in causality must be balanced with other course goals and students vary in their experience. In this talk, we will discuss an e-text supplement and other materials we developed specifically for teaching causality in introductory statistics. These materials are appropriate for a wide variety of introductory courses and designed to be implemented without extensive changes to existing courses.
