Description
This session will highlight CDC's initiative to introduce students at all levels of the U.S. educational system to mathematics and statistics through epidemiology and other core public health sciences. We present evidence of measurement of the impact of this program on selected indicators, including increases in students' knowledge regarding epidemiologic, biological, mathematical, and related principles; aptitudes in science/mathematics; awareness of CDC and its partners in state and local public health practice; interests in career tracks in public health and biomedical sciences; experiences in community-related public health problems; and actual changes in public health outcomes among students. This session will contribute directly to efforts to remedy highly publicized deficiencies U.S. students and teachers have in the sciences, mathematics, and statistics; and second, by using public health sciences to assist in improving U.S. science and statistics education, ASA can promote public health literacy, awareness of public health goals, personal public health practices, and career interests in statistical careers.
