Technicians to Collaborators: Changing the Paradigm of Student Consulting at the University of Georgia (303023)

Over the last several years, the University of Georgia’s Statistical Consulting Center (SCC) has undergone a major shift, moving from a model in which students primarily served clients as statistical technicians to one where students now lead and fully participate in client projects as collaborators and fellow researchers. This shift has given our graduate students more of the tools and skills they need to be successful collaborators in any industry in which they will be working with nonstatisticians to answer research questions. This poster presentation will highlight the steps taken to achieve this shift, from restructuring the SCC to implementing new training techniques such as videotaping and reviewing consulting sessions. Successful outcomes of this transition, including student authorships and increased workflow capacity, also will be presented.
