Born and raised in Fujian, China, Meijing Wu demonstrated an early aptitude for mathematics and statistics. She pursued her undergraduate and PhD degrees in Shanghai before moving to the United States, where she made significant contributions to both academia and industry.
Meijing was a faculty member at Northwestern University and provided statistical expertise across various research disciplines. She later transitioned to industry roles at AbbVie and Sanofi, establishing herself as a respected statistical project leader.
Throughout her career, Meijing was known for her technical excellence, leadership, and collaborative spirit. At AbbVie, she played a key role in developing statistical methodologies, work processes, tools, and document templates that continue to be widely used. At Sanofi, she took on the role of statistical project lead for high-priority programs and was instrumental in driving strategic decision-making and fostering cross-functional collaboration.
(1984 – 2024)
Beyond her professional achievements, Meijing was deeply committed to the statistical community. She was an active member of the ASA Biopharmaceutical Section, serving as associate editor and later the editor of the Biopharmaceutical Report. In this role, she introduced innovative ideas to enhance the publication’s impact. She also served on the ASA Biopharmaceutical Section Student Paper Award Committee, working to support and recognize young statisticians.
Meijing’s passion for mentoring and knowledge-sharing was evident in every aspect of her work. She guided interns and early-career statisticians to ensure they had the resources and support to succeed. She was known for her meticulous approach to mentoring and structuring research projects that led to peer-reviewed publications. Her ability to foster connections and inspire those around her made her an invaluable colleague and mentor.
Meijing’s love for statistics was unwavering. She once said, “If I could choose my career again, I would still choose statistics.” Her enthusiasm and dedication to the field were contagious, inspiring both her peers and the next generation of statisticians.
Outside of work, Meijing was an adventurer at heart. She loved hiking, playing tennis, and exploring new places with family and friends. She was an active member of her community, organizing volunteer activities and creating a virtual learning program to teach children Chinese poetry during the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of Meijing’s favorite quotes was from Louise Pasteur: “Chances favor the prepared mind.” This belief was reflected in both her professional and personal life—she approached every challenge with preparation, perseverance, and an open mind.
In November 2024, Meijing’s life was cut short by a traffic accident. Her passing was a profound loss to her family, colleagues, and friends. To honor her legacy, the donors listed below contributed to a fund supporting the Biopharmaceutical Section awards. These contributions will continue to support the next generation of statisticians—a cause Meijing championed.
