This ambassador travels the country to deliver hands-on training workshops to K–12 educators, advocates for better statistics education at conferences, helps set educational standards, and assists in developing guidelines for teachers to use in their classrooms.
This hands-on workshop provides an opportunity for middle- and high-school teachers to explore problems that require them to formulate statistical questions; collect, organize, and analyze data; and draw conclusions from that data, as well as apply basic concepts of probability. MWM includes examining what students can be expected to do at the most basic level and what can be expected of them as their skills develop and experience broadens. The program also provides teachers with the opportunity to build a professional community.
Resources such as the ASA’s classroom poster and project competitions and The New York Times’ “What’s Going On in This Graph” help teachers show their students statistics can be fun. The ASA also provides free resources such as lesson plans and an online community.
In collaboration with the Caucus for Women in Statistics and Data Science, Florence Nightingale Day encourages middle- and high-school students and their teachers to discover the opportunities for careers in statistics and data science, do activities with data, and develop connections.
