7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HEALTH POLICY STATISTICS ABSTRACT SUBMISSION – Deadline: October 1, 2007
Contributed abstract submissions are being accepted for the International Conference on Health Policy Statistics (ICHPS). Submit your abstract through October 1, 2007. Information about the conference keynote speaker, invited sessions, and workshops also is available.
JSM PROCEEDINGS SUBMISSION - Deadline: October 8, 2007
Submissions for the 2007 JSM Proceedings for posters and papers orally presented in Salt Lake City will be accepted through October 8, 2007. If you presented your paper or poster in person, you are eligible to publish in the JSM Proceedings. Templates and more information. Contact Val Snider with questions.

NEW LEARNSTAT COURSE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FUNDAMENTALS & FUNCTIONALITY OF THE R LANGUAGE – Alexandria, Virginia – October 18–19, 2007
An Introduction to the Fundamentals & Functionality of the R Language is a new LearnSTAT course for the fall. This two-day, hands-on workshop will introduce R, the free interactive programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.
FEDERAL COMMITTEE ON STATISTICAL METHODOLOGY 2007 RESEARCH CONFERENCE – Arlington, Virginia – November 5–7, 2007
The 2007 Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM) Research Conference will be held November 5–7, 2007, at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel, Arlington, Virginia. The conference provides a forum for experts from around the world to discuss and exchange current research and methodological topics relevant to federal government statistical programs. Each day of the conference will offer papers on a wide range of topics. Technical demonstrations on a variety of applications will run concurrently on the second day of the conference. Sessions feature papers and demonstrations by government, private sector, and academic researchers from nine countries.

SECTION ON STATISTICS IN DEFENCE AND NATIONAL SECURITY 2008 STUDENT PAPER AWARD
The ASA Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security awards an annual prize for the best student paper about the use of statistics on a problem in defense or national security. Papers are judged on the quality of statistical work, written presentation, and the significance of the contribution to understanding defense and/or homeland security issues. Nomination letters and the paper should be submitted to Lionel Galway by February 1, 2008.
BIOPHARMACEUTICAL SECTION’S FALL 2007 WEB-BASED TRAINING SERIES
As part of its web-based training program created earlier this year, the Biopharmaceutical Section launches the training series on adaptive designs in clinical trials presented by topic experts from the pharmaceutical industry and academia. The series will begin on October 10 and include four two-hour courses presented once a month. The Section subsidizes the series to provide its members with a convenient and inexpensive training option.
CHAPTER GET A MEMBER CHALLENGE
Time is running out to recruit new members as part of our Chapter-get-a-Member Challenge. The challenge started May 1, 2007, and will end October 31, 2007. For each new member you recruit, your Chapter will receive a $10 gift certificate good for any ASA product or service. The Chapters with the most recruits will receive a complimentary ASA membership for their officers and two free ASA memberships to award to Chapter members of their choosing.
ANNOUNCING THE PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR THE 2008 ASA ELECTION
The ASA 2007 Committee on Nominations selected Xiao-Li Meng, Harvard University, and Sastry Pantula, North Carolina State University, as candidates for the office of President-Elect. For Vice President, C. Frank Shen, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Christy J. Chuang-Stein, Pfizer, were chosen. The candidates who are elected by the full membership in the 2008 ASA election will begin serving their terms on January 1, 2009.
INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL LITERACY COMPETITION OF THE ISLP
The ISLP’s Statistical Literacy Competition is for students aged 10–18. The competition will take place once a year around early May. Specific dates will be announced to all registered teachers. Teachers register as representatives for the students in their classes who will participate.
