Moving ERS—a federal statistical agency and internationally respected agricultural economics research institution—to the policy-supporting Office of the Chief Economist would undermine its work and product quality, thereby also affecting evidence-based policymaking in the USDA and food and agriculture more generally. Adding to the ASA's concerns, the USDA used inflated employee attrition statistics to justify the move. ASA staff are working with other ERS stakeholders to communicate concerns to Congress and raise awareness of the dangers of the proposal, including a free webinar about the issue on September 20.
