A Brief Overview of Explainable and Interpretable AI (310040)

Presentation

*William Franz Lamberti, University of Virginia

Keywords: XAI, explainability, interpretability, model, assurance, Beyond Big Data

Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) adheres to the tenants of interpretability and explainability. This overview short paper connects the foundational concepts of XAI, interpretability, and explainability while also providing two cases studies of using XAI methods. The XAI case models related to medicine and satellite imagery outperform ``black box' approaches like convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Thus, the provided examples highlight the capacity to meet or exceed deep learning-based approaches using XAI methods and counteract perceived notions of model accuracy. Extended details and discussions are available as a book chapter in ``AI Assurance: Towards Valid, Explainable, Fair, and Ethical AI'.
