Abstract:
|
Linking survey data with administrative data can facilitate richer analyses by augmenting the information collected from the surveys with detailed information on outcomes such as vital status and health care utilization. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Data Linkage Program is designed to expand the analytic utility of the Center's population-based surveys. This talk will highlight a recent linkage between NCHS survey data and Medicare administrative data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services. We first describe the linkage algorithm and discuss the type I and type II errors and match rates. Next, we present an analysis using data from linked National Health Interview Survey participants aged 65 and older, summarizing survey-collected variables on demographics and health care access along with health care utilization from the linked Medicare data in the subsequent calendar year. The analysis is unique since this is the first time the survey data have been linked with Medicare Advantage encounter data in addition to Fee-for-Service claims. Finally, we discuss potential future analyses and explain how researchers can access the linked data files.
