This presentation examines sex and gender identity measurement for identifying and measuring transgender populations. Existing survey measures tend to conflate the constructs of sex and gender, however these variables are distinct and multidimensional. They are also dynamic dependent on context and construction. Drawing on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) committee to develop standards for the measurement of sex and gender, the presentation will discuss evaluations of gender identity measures, conclusions, and recommendations for surveying transgender and nonbinary population in general population surveys and administrative contexts.
