Abstract:

The Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) program, a partnership between federal statistical agencies, research institutions, and researchers, established the first of its 31 remote secure research facility in Boston, MA in 1994. The program provides screened researchers working on approved projects secure, controlled access to restricted-use microdata from the U.S. Census Bureau and other U.S. statistical agencies. In 2020, the program initiated a pilot to evaluate the administrative, legal, and technical requirements to support remote access to the FSRDC computing environment. Under this initiative, more than 140 researchers working on 80+ projects have used remote access. Remote access promotes the statistical analysis of restricted-use data by researchers facing logistical or geographic challenges to access a physical FSRDC facility. Through careful control and monitoring, the FSRDC program has facilitated statistical research during a challenging period of international turmoil, ensuring important research projects can continue and evidence is generated in support of decision-making.
