Abstract:

Both the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences have produced reports concluding that sexual minorities experience greater health and economic well-being disparities, patterns of stigma, and victimization and violence compared to non-sexual minorities. However, the routine collection of sexual orientation to monitor such trends is scarce. Additionally, there is a lack of formally recognized standards for how to measure the construct of sexual orientation. To improve the quality of data collection efforts around both sexual and gender minorities, the National Institute of Health sponsored the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Measuring Sex, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation to review and recommend measures for sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation. In this presentation, we document the current measures used to assess sexual orientation, the pros and cons associated with each, and our recommended measure for surveys and other data collections. We conclude with future research questions that must be addressed to ensure that the questions used to measure sexual orientation continue to meet content, cognitive and usability standards.
