Statisticians are a diverse group when it comes to the range of substantive areas and activities in which we find ourselves involved. There is mathematical statistics, data science, data visualization, and both theoretical and applications of statistics to a wide range of hard sciences, social sciences, the health arena, the policy arena, etc. Mathematics and statistics are touted as objective sciences that stem from formal logic and theory. Yet increasingly in the statistical community, we are realizing and appreciating the value of demographic diversity among statisticians and data sciences in our field with respect of sex, gender, race, ethnicity, language, culture, etc. So, is there a role of ‘self’ in a productive statistical career? In this address I will talk about how who you are can matter in the practice and profession of statistics, and why building and nurturing our statistical community is so important.
