Abstract:

We explore the correlations between postural balance of adults and aspects of their cerebral blood flow data, viewed as functional data, using functional principal component analysis (FPCA). Specifically, we compare the functional principal component scores of relative changes of cerebral oxygenation data for younger and older adults while transitioning from supine to stand with the center-of-balance total path lengths travelled over the 60-90 second period after standing. Our regression- and cluster-based analyses indicate that the functional shape of cerebral oxygenation following a transition is correlated with postural stability.
