Abstract:

Case-control study often enrolls heterogeneous populations. It is a challenge to discover biomarkers with these heterogeneous case-control studies because biomarkers could have heterogeneous responses making their receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves worse. In this paper, as an alternative of the ROC curve, we introduce a jittered dot plot (JDP) and two JDP summary indexes, called above mean difference (AMD) and integrated AMD (IAMD). We demonstrate how JDP with AMD (or IAMD) together evaluate heterogeneous biomarkers well compared to the standard ROC curve analysis. We apply our methods in a proteomic biomarker screening study of heterogeneous cases.
