Abstract:

Installations across the United States Army are vastly different and pose planning, organizational, operational, and other leadership challenges for Army senior leaders. It would be helpful to these senior leaders if we could create “installation types” by grouping similar installations. This would help simplify decisions regarding logistics, Soldier welfare, operational planning, and unit training. In this analysis, we look at population demographics, civilian/military workforce organization, workforce experience, and installation operational data to group installations into installation clusters. Using k-means clustering, we find nine key types of installations and explore the sensitivity of these clusters. Army senior leaders are using these clusters to inform key decisions when making personnel and organizational decisions to address pertinent problems in today’s Army.
