Abstract:

We present a study designed to estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in people (at least 2 months old) who have SARS-CoV-2 or had prior SARS-CoV-2 infection in selected communities in the United States. Complex multistage sampling designs that include stratification, clustering of units and unequal probabilities of selection will be used. Facility-based surveys will be used to sample from assisted living and skilled nursing facilities and Time-location sampling (TLS) will be used to sample from outpatient health care facilities, and neighborhoods close to the selected communities. Implementing TLS in the era of COVID-19 requires a flexible and adaptive sampling design, raising unique challenges. Three main additional challenges include (i) closure of venues, requiring to adaptively update the sampling frame; (ii) changing infection hotspots and (iii) unknown attendance at community venues and clinics with differential response rates among different age groups. Moreover, the recruitment of children and elderly raise many unique operational challenges. In this talk we will discuss these unique challenges and describe the multi-target sampling strategy developed for this study.
