Abstract:

The past year has greatly increased the need for high quality online teacher education and professional learning opportunities for preparing middle and high school teachers to teach data and statistics. Since 2015, I have led several projects to design and implement multimedia online courses, modules, microcredentials, and personalized professional learning focused on enhancing teaching statistics through data investigations using a free online data tool, CODAP. Several examples will be shared. When many universities had to pivot and offer preservice teacher education courses online, faculty turned to the free statistics teaching e-modules developed by the ESTEEM project that could be downloaded and imported into their learning management system. Practicing teachers, seeking online professional development opportunities, have engaged in online courses where they learn to engage students with online applets, visualization and analysis tools, and use of communication tools (e.g., Padlet, FlipGrid, JamBoard) to increase student engagement. Designs from a project developing a platform for teachers to personalize their professional learning in statistics teaching will be shared.
