For statisticians to experience significant organizational influence, simply possessing a mastery of statistical methodology is necessary, but it is not sufficient. To earn an opportunity to demonstrate the power of statistical thinking and methods, a statistician needs to be recognized as a collaborator. Working effectively in a diverse team requires cross-disciplinary information exchange, and the visualization of statistical concepts, data, and results are powerful communication strategies. In collaboration, it is incumbent upon the statistician to explain their methods and results in an approachable manner to non-statisticians in order for them to be embraced by the team, instead of only defending them technically. For many statisticians, improving their communication and collaboration skills may be the most challenging aspect of their career, and it is both an art and a science. In this panel presentation, strategies are offered based on extensive statistical practice and industrial organizational psychology research. Effective collaboration is personally rewarding, and it is often a key element in developing innovative solutions that produce high organizational impact.
