Abstract:
|
In early assessments vector-borne diseases were considered very likely to increase globally with climate change. There has been much disagreement amongst scientists and policy makers as to whether climate change will impact vector-borne diseases. In this talk I will review the biology of climate change impacts on vector-borne diseases, the potential public health impact and the current landscape of the debate. Recent assessments of the potential effects of climate change on the emergence and re-emergence of vector-borne diseases in Canada will be described, as will be our current knowledge of vector-borne disease emergence, including Lyme disease, in Canada. Lastly, I will describe potential priorities for adaptation responses are in terms of public health activities.
