In March, 2020, New York City became the first epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the US. Biostatisticians at NYC area medical centers were suddenly confronted with enormous professional and personal challenges during the COVID crisis. In this talk, I will share some of our stories and experiences, highlighting the many ways we used our statistical expertise to help our local institutions and research communities address the outbreak, the intense round-the-clock pressures we faced from hospital leadership who needed accurate projections of health care burden and investigators racing to publish COVID studies, as well as the methodological and personnel problems that arose and how we handled them. I will also discuss how the resources and professional network available from statistical organizations were critical to the work of biostatisticians during the pandemic.
