Abstract #315494
Title: 'Bond. James Bond.' A Statistical Look at Cinema's Most Famous Spy
Author(s): Derek S. Young*
Companies: University of Kentucky
Keywords: Data visualization; Multivariate Regression; Prediction; Ranking
Abstract:

The James Bond film franchise is one of the most enduring and financially successful franchises of all time. Since 1962, the franchise has seen six actors don the tuxedo as the infamous British spy, and anybody with a fleeting interest in the films will offer their opinion as to who is "the best Bond." In this talk, we present a quantitative and visualization exploration of metrics about the franchise's success as well as structural elements common across the films. Part of the quantitative work focuses on a bivariate regression model treating the adjusted worldwide gross and average user ratings as the responses. We also present a (reasonably) objective methodology to rank the Bond actors by considering the popularity and financial success of their respective films. This analysis is updated from the author's original 2014 paper to reflect data from the 2015 film Spectre, and depending on the tentative release data in 2021, may also include data from the newest movie No Time to Die.
