Title: Undergraduate Statistics Research: a Viewpoint from a Non-Statistician

As a senior business major planning to work in the information systems industry, my statistics experience prior to working in an undergraduate statistics research group was limited to two introductory statistics courses. Despite not planning to attend graduate school or become a statistician, I describe why working in a statistics research group has been a valuable experience and why I think statistics research should include undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds. The main benefits I see are (1) data literacy is important for all careers. This includes the ability to consume and communicate data effectively. (2) Regardless of academic path, participants can increase their understanding of statistical concepts and working collaboratively. This allows statisticians to work with individuals with less statistical knowledge and supports non-statisticians in discussing statistics and conceptualizing data-driven problems. (3) The application of different perspectives enriches research by leveraging varied perspectives and talents. Academically diversifying statistics research creates mutual benefits for scholars of different fields both students and faculty alike.
