Our introductory statistics labs were redesigned to encourage more active participation by each student and yet still encourage team work. When we did this we appealed to one of the new emphases of the GAISE 2016 College Report (GAISE College Report ASA Revision Committee), “Teach statistics as an investigative process of problem-solving and decision making”. We also incorporated ideas from Team Based Learning (Michaelson, Knight and Fink, 2004) and from SCALE UP design (Student Centered Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies - http://scaleup.ncsu.edu/). In each lab class, students are given an investigative question, collect their own data to be analyzed, and make a conclusion as an individual, group of three students, team of nine students and then as a full class. This presentation will describe the philosophy of the new labs, give examples, show survey data about the students’ experience as well as results from the COPUS (Classroom Observation Protocol for Undergraduate STEM) (Smith, M. et al., 2017) observational protocol.
