Using data from the New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey public use files combined with other data sources such as building permit data, we examine the ways in which gentrification in New York City has evolved over time, and investigate the impacts of this change on housing and neighborhood characteristics. We construct a tract-level synthetic data set to estimate housing characteristics and measures of gentrification at the Census tract level, paying particular attention to different definitions of gentrification. We then produce data visualizations that show how these measures of gentrification evolve over time and relate them to neighborhood amenities and aggregate characteristics. These new measures can be used to inform research on neighborhood housing trends, and are displayed using an R/Shiny application which allows the user to explore the data interactively and graphically.
