Abstract:

Textbooks are expensive. Over the past 40 years, textbook prices have risen about 1,000%, or four times the CPI. Many college students are choosing between purchasing course textbooks or eating (https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2018/07/26/students-sacrifice-meals-and-trips-home-pay-textbooks). At the high school level, many students are forced to use outdated textbooks or no textbooks at all. In today's information age, it does not have to be like this. I will highlight the trajectory of OpenIntro (where I am a volunteer), which has been creating high-quality, free textbooks and online resources for introductory Statistics since 2009. Large schools, such as Portland Community College, have made the switch and have saved their students literally millions of dollars. Can high schools do the same? What are the challenges and benefits? What other resources are available to teachers and students? I will also look at https://www.hippocampus.org/, which curates open content for the middle and high school level. All students should have access to high quality course materials. With developments in OER, now they can - if school districts and teachers make the leap.
