Abstract:

Communicating scientific ideas and results with the general public offers rich opportunities for Statisticians to engage with and educate others. But how do we do this in a way that effectively grabs their attention and makes an impact? In this talk, I will discuss a novel oral communication curriculum we developed and used with graduate students to help them share their work with others. I’ll use examples of the students’ podcasts and curiosity cafes to highlight how they leverage elements of storytelling, stage presence, and improvisational skills to more effectively tell their stories. I will also discuss how these ideas can transfer into our own work, offering suggestions for how to help students (and ourselves) develop and practice oral communication skills.
