Abstract:
|
Communicating our work in plain English for outsiders can be a fun challenge -- and also a powerful tool for change. Too often these skills in writing for a general audience are neither taught nor rewarded in school or careers, however. In this talk I will show through examples of my articles and that of other statisticians the broad range of types of writing that can make an impact on the world, from BBC to Slate to comic books. I will also discuss ideas for incorporating lay-language writing into the curriculum, workplace, and professional organizations such as the ASA.
