We have an opportunity every class period to have an impact on who ends up pursuing a higher degree in Statistics. In a first course, we represent the entire field, and while no one person embodies the diverse identities of working statisticians, we can expose and model to our students an inclusive culture through small adjustments to our pedagogy. I'll share my experiences of making concrete changes to try to cultivate a more inclusive classroom dynamic. In particular, I'll discuss approaches to setting the tone on the first day, constructing more inclusive assignments, and intertwining ethical awareness with foundational concepts.
