Title: Development of the Canadian Marginalization Index Using Factor Analysis
Author(s): Camille Charbonneau*
Companies: Statistics Canada
Keywords: Marginalization index; Factor analysis
Abstract:

Marginalization indices are being used more frequently by researchers in the fields of health, education and justice. In order to respond to the growing demand of researchers in the justice field, marginalization indices have been created using micro-data from the Canadian Census of Population. The methodology applied to create the indices is based on an existing national marginalization index containing four marginalization dimensions: residential instability, material deprivation, dependency and ethnic concentration. The indices, based on census micro-data, have been created at the national level and for the province of Saskatchewan. This presentation will detail the method used to create the marginalization indices using factor analysis and will detail the differences between the national and provincial indices and the possible applications for research using justice data.
