Abstract:

Propensity score analyses has gained wide popularity as a statistical approach to assess a causal relationship between an exposure and outcome in an observational study. When data arise from a complex sample there are many statistical strategies to account for the clustering, stratification and the unequal probability of selection. This project uses data among a subset of childbearing women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to assess the association between A1C and body iron deficiency to control for covariate imbalance. Many observational studies have reported this association between iron deficiency (ID) and A1C measurements, but none have examined this association using statistical methods which can draw causal inferences, such as propensity scores. The objectives of the study are (1) to estimate the prevalence of iron deficiency (body iron stores < 0 mg/kg) and elevated A1C (2) to identify a set of confounding variables and risk factors for elevated A1C (3) to apply various propensity score methods used for complex surveys to study the relationship between A1C and iron deficiency and compare with estimates based on traditional statistical methods.
