Abstract:

The ASA funded and endorsed Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistical Education (GAISE, 2010) contained a wealth of useful information. However, in a section on goals for the introductory course, the first on a list of what students should believe and understand why was "Data beat anecdotes." This was followed up by the US Conference on Teaching Statistics (USCOTS, 2016) where one of the 2017 conference themes was "Helping students recognize data beat anecdotes (their emphasis) and are essential for evidence-based decision making." Such statements were viewed as extreme by some and indeed one of the GAISE co-authors, Jessica Utts began walking it back in her 2016 ASA Presidential address saying " ...even a cursory knowledge of what's happening in politics should convince us that anecdotes often beat data, and powerfully so." The data/anecdote idea will be explored, and qualifications offered. These developments have implications for statistical instruction.
