Abstract:

The findings of this presentation will assist the understanding of factors that influence retention and graduation for college students from rural and urban areas. This presentation describes the analysis of the retention and postsecondary pathways of rural and urban students who attended a large research institution between the years of 2010 and 2016. This project used de-identified enrollment data from a large, urban research institution and the National Student Clearinghouse. These data were analyzed to reveal the similarities, differences and outcomes for students who were but are no longer attending a large research institution, with a focus on students originally from rural areas. The National Student Clearinghouse data provides information on student transfers to another institution and if applicable, their performance (if they were retained or graduated) at the other institution(s). Particular attention was paid to the performance of urban versus rural students, which is determined by the Rural-Urban Density Codes (Isserman, 2005). Descriptive statistics, logistic regression and visual plots are used to communicate results from the data.
