Abstract:

The Department of Defense Test and Evaluation (T&E) community plans, coordinates, evaluates the testing of complex military systems. This testing is ripe for the application of statistical design and analysis techniques. Significant policy and guidance initiatives have made the use of experimental design and statistical analysis more common in recent years. However, access to statistical experts has limited the application of advanced statistical methods. Moreover, statistical textbooks do not provide clear solutions for the complex needs of Defense testing. In this round-table we will discuss the benefits and challenges of increasing the use of statistical methods in T&E. Questions to ponder include: What are the potential gains of increased statistical rigor? What methods have demonstrated the largest impact? What are the educational needs of the workforce to increase the use of statistics in T&E?
